Pictures Are Worth Words

Famous paintings are wonderful to study and admire. They also have another life- as prompts for WFW classes.
I regularly use a reproduction from a well-known artist. At one meeting it was Edward Hopper’s “Morning Sun”, In Hopper’s painting a woman is sitting on a bed and looking out her window. I asked the group to write about the thoughts going through the woman’s mind.
This poem was one result:
If Only
I look out at a sun filled sky,
A day full of promise.

Different Cover, Same Book

They recently closed the doors of the Cancer Support Community-Delmarva in Salisbury, MD. because of lack of funding. Six members of our Writing For Wellness group wanted to continue meeting and continue to heal. We also decided to open up membership, no longer limiting our membership to Cancer survivors and caregivers. Anyone who wants to heal through writing will be welcome. Time will tell whether we succeed without sponsorship.

Since 2001, I have been teaching writing to cancer patients, their family members, doctors, nurses, caregivers, and others who may have suffered tragic events in their lives.
Writing for Wellness classes are held at the City of Hope National Cancer Center in Duarte, California, the site Lance Armstrong, one of the world’s most famous cancer survivors, chose to start his 2004 cross-country bicycle tour for cancer awareness.
